In October 2021, McGowan Environmental Engineering were awarded contracts worth £7.2m by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution to deliver 81-kilometers of 33kV cabling at Burn of Whilk Wind Farm* (Caithness) and Moy Wind Farm (near Inverness).
The Burn of Whilk project completed in early 2022 and this video provides an overview of the specialist works undertaken.
The project involved the installation of new single-circuit and triple-circuit underground cabling plus fibre-optic cable - including cross-bonding and intermediate earthing - across rural land. A specialist plough was commissioned and McGowan introduced a new and exclusive cable wrap technology, used for the first time ever in the UK. More exciting news on this to follow soon...!!
Thanks to our friends at Scotland: The Big Picture for producing the video.
*Burn of Whilk Wind Farm, located South of Wick, is owned and run by Eneco UK and became fully operational in September 2015. The nine-turbine wind farm has a power capacity of 22.5MW and has the ability to generate the equivalent energy needs of 12,500 households per year.
